Proflora awarded the winners of the Variety Competition 2021
An international jury chose from 286 varieties the best flowers that will set trends over the next two years in the main international markets.
October 6th, 2021. Bogotá, Colombia. The Colombian Association of Flower Exporters, Asocolflores, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Procolombia, awarded the winners of its Proflora 2021 Variety Competition in the breeder and grower categories, while choosing a grand champion of the contest.
For Augusto Solano, president of Asocolflores, “This contest demonstrates the commitment and drive of the floriculture sector at a time when the country’s economic reactivation asks us to commit ourselves as never before to the generation of employment and exports. As a guild, we are certain that this type of action shows the international community that Colombian flower growers continue to work and, best of all, continue to innovate and set trends in the sector.
The Variety Contest is traditionally held during Proflora, the most important national and international fresh cut flower exhibition fair in the world. In view of the responsibility to the international visitors this event attracts and the situation caused by the pandemic, it was decided to postpone the event to 2023. However, the Proflora 2021 Variety Contest was held as the best preliminary action for the return of Proflora in 2023.
With this award, in which flower producing companies and breeders participated, Colombia shows that it has become the epicenter of floriculture worldwide and lays very important foundations that will allow exporters to conquer new markets.
The judging panel was composed of experts and was chaired by Jaap Kras, of great trajectory in international floriculture. Fourteen flower species were awarded in two categories: breeders and growers.
